What this is about

Because you are here this means you know that roof-top camping is becoming increasingly popular. More and more people are choosing to take to the road and explore the great outdoors.

One of the essential accessories with any rooftop tent is an awning. The reason is simple, an awning is a piece of equipment necessary for your daily activities next to your vehicle. During the day, you will not spend time in the rooftop tent itself.

So an awning provides protection from the sun and rain, and it makes a lot of difference when you are at places where you are exposed to elements. Such an accessory will make your camping experience more comfortable.

The picture below shows it from the front, so you realize that it creates a large covered space above the ladder. With this you can move in the space between the the tent and the car while being protected.

The word Approach refers to the new series of roof top tents that Thule launched recently under the name Thule Approach. They have them in several different sizes, and the Awning is designed to fit the tents.

So the Approach Awning S/M fits S and M Approach rooftop tents. But there is also an L version as well. The pictures here show the poles with the same length but you can change this and have different shapes of the awning.

Note that they have a useful Thule Approach Awning manual so you can consult it if necessary.

The poles

You have four telescopic aluminum poles with the twist-locking system similar to trekking poles, see the picture. There are three locks on each pole, and the picture shows how they look next to each other when the pole is detracted.

You can use them in the length range 31-98 inches (79-249 cm). This is convenient when you want to regulate privacy, or to adjust the awning to provide a shade as the sun changes position over the sky. The poles are 28 mm diameter.

The fabric

They do not provide much information about the fabric. All you can find is that this is a water-resistant and lightweight polyester. There is nothing about its actual waterproof.

The picture below shows how you zip it to the Thule Approach tent above its door.

Note that the Approach Awning L has the same size, so it seems the difference is only related to the length of the zipper which is supposed to match the larger Approach L roof top tent.

The Thule Approach Awning is easy to set up, with a one-person setup taking just a few minutes. In the video below you can see how to use it, please have a look:

Summary

In summary, the Thule Approach Awning is an important and essential addition to your Thule rooftop tent, it adds to comfort and protection whenever you are around the car.

It is compact and it will not take much space in the car. It is also easy to install, so you can use it during short breaks during your car tour. This is worth the effort in particular if you have no shade close to your car.

But you can use it also if you have other accessories around, like a screenhouse or a ground tent. With the Awning, you can connect all your camping elements into one functional set.
