TentBox Lite 2.0 vs TentBox Lite

This TentBox Lite 2.0 vs TentBox Lite is about two soft-shell type roof top tents built in a very similar style. But there are differences in the fly design and fabric.

What this is about

So here you have the TentBox Lite that has been on the market for a number of years already. It is compared with another roof top tent from the same brand that is under the name TentBox Lite 2.0.

In spite of very similar names these two tents are quite different. In fact even the official capacity seems to be different, but more about this below.

Similarities of the two roof top tents

Here is a list of the most important similarities:

  • Both weigh 110 pounds (50 kg). This is a bit surprising because they are of a different size.
  • These are soft shell roof top tents. This means they need a simple and easy assembly. This is just about removing the cover, and then unfolding the tent and adding a few awning poles.
  • They fold for transportation to half of their size.
  • You have openings on all sides with zippered mesh and with panels.
  • Metal parts are a stainless steel and aluminum.
  • These tents come with their standard 5 years warranty.
  • In the TentBoox Lite page they write about 3-people capacity, but when you see the size it is clear this makes no sense. On the page of TentBox Lite 2.0, they write about 2-people capacity. This seems realistic. So it is reasonable to assume that the capacity is the same.
  • They describe them as 4-season shelters. I am not sure this is so. Namely, the fabric is indeed stronger than in most ground type 4-season tents, but those awnings and fly hanging attached to them would not last in severe winds and snow conditions.
  • As of the moment of writing this text, the prices are almost identical.

Please see this video where the TentBox Lite is presented:

TentBox Lite 2.0 vs TentBox Lite – the differences

Here are some differences that I noticed, the table includes parameters and features. I add the weight, which is the same, just to make this important parameter clear.

So as you see there are differences in the dimensions, they are shown in the pictures below as well. The inner area is larger in the Lite, you have around 15% more. But I do not see this as a big deal, they are both for two users maximum, and this is enough space in any case.

Vents: There are four vents in the Lite 2.0, and two in the Lite tent. The former you can see in the picture below, it shows inner view of the Lite 2.0. Two of its vents are visible on the right as triangular elements above the windows on the right.

I think it is easy to get delighted when you see how it looks. One of the skylight windows is visible, there is one more.

What they have changed in this TentBox Lite 2.0

Here are some of the most important changes:

• The tent has two skylights. There is one in the Lite tent.

• The included mattress is a dual layer memory foam.

• They claim that it is with a brand-new fabric made of Cordura. Apparently, it will not fade over time. You have the best quality YKK zippers. So these are excellent materials.

• The waterproof rating is higher. Now you have 3000 mm for the inner pod and 5000 mm for the rainfly. In the Lite version this is 2000 and 4000 mm, respectively.

• Apparently the windows are larger in the Lite 2.0, but I do not see a big difference here.

Fly changes

The most important changes seem to be are in the fly and in the two side windows. You can realize this if you compare the pictures below.

So this is the Lite 2.0 version, and it has 6 poles that support all those awnings. Two of these poles are on the sides and they lift the fly above the windows. Hence, these two windows do not have their own poles for the awnings as in the Lite version below.

But note that the Lite version has those translucent sections, you can see them on the left and on the right. They are on all four sides of the fly. This makes the inner brighter. My guess is this is why they have added one more skylight window in the Lite 2.0 version above.

In the Lite version you have 8 poles in total, 4 of them are used for the awnings of the side windows.

All in all, I am not really sure that this fly design is an improvement.

My rating

in the table below I summarize my rating for these two tents based on all the details presented above:

Waterproof rating

SCORE

TentBox Lite 2.0

4/6

TentBox Lite

2/6

I guess there is no need to elaborate further on why I give those + signs to one or another tent. But according to the rating, the Lite 2.0 version is better. The truth is that both tents are excellent.

Final thoughts

To conclude this TentBox Lite 2.0 vs TentBox Lite comparison by stressing the following. If you already have the Lite version, then you have a great roof top tent and you would not gain much by buying the Lite 2.0.

However, if you are in the process of buying a roof top tent of this type, and undecided which to choose, I think you should go for the Lite 2.0 tent.

Let me know what you think, there is a comment box below. See in my another text how this TentBox Lite 2.0 compares with the Roofnest Meadowlark tent. Do you know that the TentBox brand also has a 4-person version built in the same style as this Lite 2.0? So follow the link if you need a larger tent.
