The iKamper X Cover 2.0 Roof Top Tent is a design unique to this brand, with high quality materials and excellent features for year round use. Keep reading.

Key features & benefits

  • Hybrid hard-soft shell design.
  • Bedding stores inside.
  • Cross bars included.
  • Double skylight windows.
  • Awnings.
  • 4 Storage pockets.
  • YKK zippers.

What this is about

It is a bit difficult to set this iKamper X Cover 2.0 Roof Top Tent in any group. It is neither a soft-shell nor a hard-shell type.

Namely, when closed, its top is a hard material, and there is no fabric cover as in soft shell tents. This also means there are no annoying zippers that normally come with such a cover. You only have one buckle and one hook to release, see the picture:

Easy to open when packed.

But it is not a true hard shell roof top tent because it only has a solid bottom and a solid top, the sides are not solid. Here you have a waterproof skin that runs the perimeter.

So the tent extends/expands just like any soft-shell roof top tent, and it closes the same way. You can see all the details in their useful manual.

Note that bedding stores inside of the tent. This is what you would expect from hard shell tents but not from soft shell tents. This is why they describe it as a hybrid design.

Inside, this is a pleasant and large structure and you can realize this from the picture below. There are two sets of storage pockets on two sides.

Cross bars included

With the mentioned solid top, this structure allows for attaching cross bars on the box when closed. This is why you can transport some bulky items on it just like on some hard shell roof top tents.

This is a great feature and a true bonus; they have included the cross bars in the package, the picture below shows how they look.

With such a relatively simple addition, this roof top tent becomes far more versatile and functional. Just see the picture:

The windows and the door

The tent has openings on all four sides, and this means three separate windows plus a door. All of them are at least double layer type with a zippered mesh and a zippered panel. So you can use them as it suits you.

The rear window has more of it as it also has the fly with its extra flap that can be open and closed as you wish. But there are more interesting details related to windows, you will see them in the video.

All these openings are protected by awnings created by the fly. The side awnings are symmetric and with one loop pole each, and the rear window is with an awning supported by rods. A similar rods support is above the door, see the pictures:

But this is not all, you also have two large skylight windows, see below how they look. Here too you have mesh and panels separately.

The fly has translucent windows that match these skylights on the ceiling. So you can have light from above even when the fly is on.

Ventilation

You have already seen all the openings, so this should work well in almost all conditions. The windows are under awnings and you can keep the at least partly open even when it rains.

But note that the skylight windows may remain with mesh only even in the rain because they are under the fly. So they will always work as gigantic roof vents. Even with a bit of air circulation from any of the side windows, you will always have enough fresh air inside.

Materials

The solid parts are a combination of a high-performance honeycomb aluminum panels used for the floor, and a scratch/UV resistant black FRP top.

The words floor and bottom I use here in terms of a closed tent. When you open it, then both these parts become a solid platform upon which the tent sits. The overhanging part is then supported with the included ladder that packs in the box. The mentioned perimeter fabric of the box is a durable canvas.

The tent’s body is made of a breathable, black-out, 300 gsm poly-cotton canvas. So this is again a great material. If you are not familiar with the terminology, this means you have a dark rest tent so you can sleep longer in the morning, and the fabric is a blend of a natural cotton and polyester.

The partial coverage fly is a waterproof polyester 75D ripstop with an eco-friendly water-repellent (DWR) coating. I could not find the actual waterproof rating. All the elements in the package are shown in the picture:

Note that all the poles and rods shown here come stored in a convenient zippered pocket inside of the tent directly under the door.

Mattress: You have a 2.75 inches (7 cm) thick PU foam mattress included. They describe it as a 9-zone construction that should imply some sort of body mapping for increased support and comfort. There is an insulation/reflective layer on its underside. The mattress is in a very pleasant removable quilted cover.

Here is a video about installation, please have a look. You do not need any extra tool.

With such materials and features, this tent can surely be used year round, in any season and climate. But it is fair to say that the same holds for almost all roof top tents presented here in the site.

Dimensions & capacity

Below you have all the numbers given and you get some idea about the capacity of this shelter.

Note that the tent is very long, and the width is such that it can easily accommodate three adults. There is also enough place for parents with two kids. The official weight capacity of 900 pounds (408 kg) is such that it indeed can support all of them.

Summary

In summary, this iKamper X Cover 2.0 Roof Top Tent is a unique and top quality product, but this is not surprising for the brand behind it. iKamper is a Korean company with separate branches on separate continents.

The tent is easy to use and it includes features of both soft and hard shell roof top tents. So it expands the same way as any soft shell tent, but it has a solid top with integrated cross bars to transport bulky items. The quality is second to none. Fully recommended.

For more stuff of this type please check under the category Roof Top Tents. Check its smaller cousin, the iKamper X-Cover 2.0 Mini. If the mattress which you have in this tent is not thick enough, check the BunduTop Roof Top Tent, you have 10 cm there.
