What is in the name

This is one out of several roof top tents of this brand in their Skycamp series. It has essentially the same features as their Skycamp 3.0 roof top tent, the main difference is the capacity which is 2 people in the Mini tent.

With such a capacity you might think that it could be similar to their iKamper Skycamp 3 2X, but this is not so. These two shelters are quite different, and the Mini is better from several aspects. I discussed this in a detailed comparison between these two tents.

Overview of features

So this is a clamshell type roof top tent, and more precisely an expandable design. The meaning of this is that its hard shell box is relatively small, but the actual sleeping area is much bigger because it expands when you lift the lid/roof. The picture below shows the expanded part on the right.

Note that the tent folds together with the ladder and its included mattress, and you can also keep your bedding inside.

The differences between the box and the actual sleeping area are shown in the pictures below. The box size is on the left, and on the right you see how the actual sleeping area looks and the way you use the floor.

With such a design, both occupants have the same access to the ladder, and this is convenient to have during the night when you have to go to bathroom.

The door and windows

This tent has one door with a window on it, plus two separate windows on the sides. All these openings are double layer with a separate zippered mesh and a zippered panel.

The pictures below show some details. On the right you see the draw-strings from inside which you can use to pull up blinds/awnings and to have views.

The previously mentioned expandable design has yet another good side, the roof allows for a skylight window. This is indeed what you have here, see how it looks from inside:

Observe also the world map on the wall, it is on the underside of the lid. There is insulation between the lid and the map.

The mentioned skylight window is a double layer type, with a zippered mesh plus a zippered panel. This means you can open it completely and stand up as in the picture below:

This can work only when the fly is rolled up as in the picture below, and this means when the sky is clear. Below you can see a few more details related to awnings and the fly, as you see all this can be rolled up for unobstructed views.

But note that you have a set of support poles for each of these openings, so you can keep awnings expanded when this suits you. You will see more in the video below.

Ventilation

There are no separate vents here, but you can manage without them. In intervals with rain you might have to keep side windows closed. But you will also have the fly on, and this means that you can still keep the skylight window with mesh only. This will provide as much ventilation as you need, and vapor can escape.

Mattress

You have a 9-zone, 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) mattress with insulated polyfoam, and it is covered with a pleasant quilted cover shown in the picture below. I must say I am not impressed with its thickness.

Other features include:

• Dual wall pockets on two sides.
• A cable port on the bottom.
• Very good wind rating.
• YKK zippers.

Materials

The shell is a combination of a strong honeycomb aluminum panels used for the bottom, and the lid is a double-layered fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) with a 1 inch insulation.

The walls fabric is a very strong breathable blackout 300 gsm poly-cotton canvas. So when all those openings are zipped, you have a true dark rest tent and you can sleep longer in the morning.

The fly is a 75D ripstop polyester with an eco-friendly (DWR) coating and a 3000 waterproof rating. All the elements in the package are shown in the picture:

What I dislike in this iKamper Skycamp 3.0 Mini

There is no option to attach cross bars on the top of the lid. This is available in some roof top tents on the market, you can see it in the Freespirit Recreation Aspen tent.
