iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X vs iKamper Skycamp 3.0 Roof Top Tents

The only purpose of this iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X vs iKamper Skycamp 3.0 comparison is to show clearly that these are two very different roof top tents in spite of similar names. They are beyond comparison regarding many features.

What this is about

If you follow iKamper brand, you know that they have had the iKamper Skycamp 3.0 on the market for some time already. This is a clamshell type but also extendable hard shell roof top tent. Its capacity is officially for four people.

The picture below shows it from the side so you can see the extended part that is on the side of the car and here you have the ladder which is not so close to the car.

On the other hand, they have launched very recently a new clamshell type roof top tent under the name iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X. The picture below shows how it looks.

Observe that this is a non-expandable clamshell roof top tent, there is no extension on the side of the car, and the ladder here is very close to the car’s door.

The meaning of this is that its inner sleeping area is determined by the size of its shell. This shelter is for two people only, you will see more below.

So now you realize that these two roof top tents cannot be compared, they are in different groups regarding capacity and also regarding the type. It is a bit hard to understand why they used such a similar name for this new shelter.

The most important differences

The floor plan & capacity

In the picture below you have the iKamper Skycamp 3 2X with the dimensions of the shell box, and with actual inner sleeping area dimensions.

Now compare this with the iKamper Skycamp 3 shown below. As you realize, the box is the same size, but the actual sleeping area is completely different. This is because here you have an expandable design.

Non-extendable and extendable types

Let’s see more related to this. In the pictures below you have the iKamper Skycamp 3 2X on the left, and the iKamper Skycamp 3 on the right.

As you realize, the picture on the right shows that the floor is extended on the side of the car. So only this dimension is very different, everything else is the same.

So perhaps this might explain why they decided to use the slightly modified name of the existing tent.

Storage space

First to stress that the box thickness is the same in both, 13 inches (33 cm). So now imagine, in this new iKamper Skycamp 3 2X you do not have the extendable floor that folds back into the box.

This means that the box will have extra volume to store your bedding. But is this a big deal here?

Well, in case you did not know, the iKamper Skycamp 3 also allows for leaving bedding inside. It is just that you have to move it into one half of the box area to make space for the folding floor of the extension.

So the storage space is larger in the iKamper Skycamp 3 2X, but the essential functionality regarding leaving bedding in the box for transportation is the same.

To explain the numbers in the table. The weight difference is obvious but this is simply because the iKamper Skycamp 3 2X is smaller. It may be interesting to compare it with the BadAss Rugged Clamshell Roof Top Tent which is considerably lighter and also larger.

So it cannot be described as particularly light when compared with some other 2-person clamshell roof top tents.

But the iKamper Skycamp 3 2X is also effectively heavier per square meter than the iKamper Skycamp 3. This is the meaning of the Weight/Area parameter which gives the weight in kilograms per m².

As of the moment of writing this text, the prices of the two tents are such that you pay far less per square meter if you buy the iKamper Skycamp 3.

Finally, the length is not so great in the iKamper Skycamp 3 2X. This would work for me, but this is far from enough for tall users.

Final thoughts

In summary, I prepared this iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X vs iKamper Skycamp 3.0 Roof Top Tents comparison only to show that these are very different tents in spite of a similar name.

The iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X is a 2-person non-extendable clamshell shelter, while the iKamper Skycamp 3.0 is extendable and  4-person.

The iKamper Skycamp 3.0 is effectively lighter per square meter, and it is also effectively cheaper per square meter. Its area per person is smaller than in the iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X, but you do not have to use it as a 4-person tent.

However, this all may be meaningless if you have a small car with a lower roof weight capacity. In this case you have to go for a lighter option and here this is the iKamper Skycamp 3 2X.

Let me know what you think about the tents presented here. Did I miss mentioning something important? There is a comment box below.
