iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X Roof Top Tent

The iKamper Skycamp 3.0 2X Roof Top Tent is a clamshell type hard shell roof top tent with three windows and a skylight window, easy to use, and suitable for year round use.

Key features & benefits

  • Clamshell roof top tent.
  • 2 Person capacity.
  • Very easy to use.
  • 1 Door.
  • 3 Windows + a skylight window.
  • Integrated awnings.
  • Dark rest design.

What is in the name

The name of this tent may be a bit confusing. This because they use the name of their already existing and well-known tent and just add 2X to it. But these two tents are completely different. You can read more in my text with comparison Skycamp 3.0 2X vs Skycamp 3.0.

In any case, this is a non-expandable clamshell roof top tent, and this means that its inner sleeping area is determined by the size of its shell box. So there is no expansion of its floor area.

Overview of features

From the pictures below you get some idea about the overall shape and structure. So the box is not particularly thin on the roof, but it is aerodynamic, and you have plenty of volume inside to keep you bedding for transportation.

Note that with such a design, the ladder is next to the car’s door so you can use only the one on the opposite side.

Windows and the door

There is one door with window on it, and there are also two separate windows on the sides. But being a clamshell shelter, it has a fabric ceiling where you have an extra skylight window shown in the picture below. Observe the spreader pole that supports the ceiling.

All windows and the door are with integrated awnings. Below on the left you can see how the awning on the side window can be raised up to have views. But you have support poles to keep it extended when you need it.

The windows are with zippered mesh and also with zippered panels, you can see these details in the other two pictures. With this you can regulate the air flow and privacy, and remain safe from insects as well.

Inside you have the world map which is on the underside of the lid, see the picture. This is a cool feature they have in their other tents as well.

Materials

The shell: You have a combination of aluminum used for the bottom, and a double-layered fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) roof/lid with 1 inch insulation. It is behind the quilted fabric in the picture above.

The fabric: The walls are a breathable, black-out, 300 gsm polycotton canvas. So this is a great material and you have a dark rest inside to sleep longer in the morning.

There is a rain fly as well and this is a 75D ripstop polyester with an eco-friendly water-repellent (DWR) coating and 3000 mm waterproof rating.

Mattress

In this Skycamp 3.0 2X you have a 9-zone, 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) thick insulated polyfoam. So it is not particularly thick but this is normal for such tents.

What is included

In the picture below you can see all the elements in the package:

Who is this Skycamp 3.0 2X for

Regarding best use & seasons, they claim that this Skycamp 3 2X is a 4-season shelter and you can use it year round. In specifications they write that for safety reasons, the tent should not be used in the event of strong winds exceeding 23 mph (37 km/h)

All the windows are fully closable to protect you from the cold and the walls are a thick fabric.

But note that there are no vents here, pity. When you close the windows in intervals with rain, you would want to have such a feature.

However, there are tents of this type with integrated vents, you can see them in my comparison of Roofnest Falcon 2 XL and the 23Zero Kabari.

The other thing that is missing is absence of cross bars attachment on the top of the roof top tent. You would want to have this for some bulky items.

Regarding the size, you can see in the floor plan below what this is about. The tent is officially for two users, the floor area is 27 ft² (2.5 m²), and the dimensions are in the picture on the right.

So the shelter is not particularly long, if you are a tall person this is not for you. The width is not bad, but one user must sleep close to the lid. Now, the lid is at a large angle so this is not so bad.

Note that their iKamper BDV Duo is considerably longer, and the same holds for their iKamper Skycamp Mini.
