What this iKamper Annex Plus is about

In my text about using roof top tents for family camping, I discussed some essential accessories that you need. Basically, this is about some extra protected space for your day activity.

Clearly, there are a variety of options that you can use, but nothing is as convenient as this Annex Plus tent. Note the word Plus in the name, this is to make the difference from yet another Annex which they have for their Skycamp 2.0 series.

What you have here is a single-layer tent that can be easily attached to your roof top tent, so you have a huge protected space on the ground. It protects the access to the roof top tent and it integrates the car into this camping castle.

When you are inside of the Annex Plus tent, you are fully protected from the flying insects. Huge mesh windows on its three sides allow for views around while sitting in the shade. The picture below shows how it can look, you will have more below.

Which roof top tents does this iKamper Annex Plus fit?

They have it for several of their roof top tents. I shall focus on their Skycamp 3.0 and Skycamp Mini roof top tents, but just to know you can order it also for Skycamp 3.0 2X, X-Cover 2.0, and also X-Cover 2.0 Mini.

The pictures below show the floor plans and some dimensions so you get the idea about the size of the protected space:

This picture shows the Skycamp 3 roof top tent on the right. The area under the Annex Plus on the left is around 147.4 ft² (13.7 m²).

In the picture below you see the same Annex Plus from the side. As you realize, you have a stand up height in the bigger part of it.

The Mini roof top tent is narrower than the Skycamp 3, so the Annex Plus for Mini follows its dimensions. The picture below shows its floor plan:

The total floor area under this Annex Plus is around 129 ft² (12 m²), so this is again a very generous living area. Below you have a few more numbers related to its height.

Overview of features

Doors and windows

You have three huge external doors on its three sides shown in the picture. You can roll them all up and keep out of way when not needed.

But note that there is also a divider that separates the Annex Plus area from the area that is under the extension of the roof top tent. You will see in the video how it is used. It is visible in the picture above. The divider is equipped with a central zipper so you have yet another door to get into the car.

When the divider is closed, you have a a completely enclosed space under the Annex Plus so that flying insects cannot get in.

If you still need more shade and covered space, you can create an awning with the door flap as shown below.

There are two separate side windows. You can replace the door on the narrow side with yet another accessory window. All of them are true double-layer structures with mesh for protection from insects and with zippered panels for rain protection and privacy, see the picture below.

Is it freestanding?

They write it is freestanding, but strictly speaking it is not. This is a tunnel-type tent with two loops that support it. You stake it to the ground on the rear side and on the longer sides. The side to the car you zip to the roof top tent, see the picture below.

If you detach it from the roof top tent, it would collapse backward. But this is an easy fix, just reposition the two side guylines and move them with stakes to the area in the direction of the car. This is what makes it self-supporting.

So you can now unzip it from the car and drive away while the Annex remains ready in the camp. You have to detach the divider first of course.

Materials

The poles: You have two solid shock-corded and color-coded pre-bent poles with a pin and ring attachment design to attach them at the tent’s base. Higher on the canopy you have clips and sleeves are on the roof. The poles are very thick and they look incredibly strong.

The fabric: You have a strong and durable 150D rip-stop polyester Oxford with a 3000 mm PU Coating, WR, UV, and antibacterial. The picture below shows all the elements in the package:

Who is this iKamper Annex Plus for

From the text above you already know how to use it. So this is a large additional protected space that you need if you go camping with your roof top tent. It is useful regardless of how many people is with you.

Note that it is completely closable so you can use it in any weather conditions. The poles are strong and reliable, and the same holds for the fabric with its huge waterproof rating.

You have a full set of guylines and stakes to secure it completely. All in all, this is a must-have addition to your iKamper roof top tent.

They have separate accessories to this accessory tent. So you can order the following elements:

  • Annex Plus Inner Tent. This is a pleasant polycotton tent that you can attach in the Annex Plus. So you will have 31 square feet (2.9 m²) of space for you, while your kids can sleep in the roof top tent.
  • Canopy Poles. They use this name for the aluminum awning poles mentioned above.
  • Annex Plus Footprint. This you can use as an extra element for comfort in the Annex, regardless of using the inner tent or not.

Final thoughts

In summary, I am totally impressed with this iKamper Annex Plus. The designers of this brand have done a really great job here, such an attention to details must be appreciated. I have never seen a more functional accessory shelter for a roof top tent.

This is a far better option than using a separate family camping tent or a screen house next to your car with the roof top tent. But they have not stopped there, they provide several extra elements to make the life in camp even more comfortable. Simply incredible. Fully recommended.
