Best Roof Top Tents with an Annex

Here you have my selection of the best roof top tents with an annex currently available on the market, all excellent ground rooms for extra comfort in the camp.

Having an annex with a roof top tent may be essential unless you really change your place very frequently. With such an addition you have a protected area on the ground where you need it during the day.

You can use it for cooking if it rains outside, for sitting in the pleasant shade during a sunny day, and even for sleeping if the space in the roof top tent is not enough.

The annexes in the list are all from globally known brands, and some of them have been around for years, so they have been tried and tested by many users.

My selection of the best rooftop tents with annex

The roof top tents in the list below are ordered by the tent weight from lighter to heavier.

1. iKamper Skycamp Mini

iKamper Skycamp with Annex.
iKamper Skycamp with Annex.

I am focusing here on the Skycamp Mini from iKamper, but they have several tents for which they provide their appropriate ground Annex.

Both the tent and the annex are described in my separate texts. Here just to stress that the tent is a hard shell type, and more precisely this is a clamshell roof top tent. Its weight is 123 lb (56 kg), just to know why it is in this position in the list.

The annex is a unique design and you will not find anything similar on the market. So this is basically a tunnel-type tent that attaches to the roof top tent as in the picture above.

You can use it on its own as well. This means that you can also detach it from the car and drive around, while the annex can remain in place in the camp.

Yet another interesting detail is that they provide their iKamper Annex Plus Inner Tent. So this is a tent designed specifically for the annex. In other words, you can use these two items for camping in the usual way, on the ground.

2. Thule Tepui Explorer Autana

Thule Tepui Explorer Autana.
Thule Tepui Explorer Autana.

There are several versions of this tent on the market, the one presented here is officially for up to 4 people. This is based on its sleeping area that measures 96 x 72 inches (244 x 183 cm), so you have around 48 square feet (4.46 m²).

It is interesting that several well-known tents of this type have the same floor area, so most likely they come from the same fabric. In any case, this is a soft shell roof top tent. They claim that it is built for year-round use and in any climate.

You have a high-quality UV and mold resistant 600D 260 gsm polycotton fabric. This is a huge denier value so you have a strong and thick material.

The tent weighs 151 pounds (68.7 kg), and Its static weight capacity is 650 pounds (295 kg). The peak internal height is 56 inches (142 cm).

It comes with a 2.56 inches (6.5 cm) high density foam mattress. You have panoramic skylight windows to stargaze, and windows are also on all sides to enjoy the nature. There are exterior attachment points for lamps, and four large inner storage pockets for storage.

But this is a roof top tent with an annex, and this is the reason for including it here of course. The annex can be ordered separately, and when in place, it gives you a fully protected ground room. So the car and the roof top tent are connected with this extra space that serves as a hub during the day.

3. Roam Adventure the Vagabond XL Rooftop Tent

This tent and its annex are both very similar to the Thule Tepui Explorer Autana. Here too you have the tent body made of a durable ripstop polycotton with UV protection, but it is 280 gsm. The fly is a strong 600D PU-coated diamond ripstop nylon.

This is again a soft shell roof top tent with 2 skylight windows and 4 side windows and it offers a porch to which its annex connects. The annex is floored and the floor is removable, you have a zipper in place.

The annex has walls on all the sides, so this is a fully enclosed space, with two double-layer windows and a double-layer door.

Note also that this brand offers an insulating cocoon which you can put inside the tent for additional protection from the cold. The tent and its accessories are described in detail in my separate text.

Final thoughts

So this was my selection of the roof top tents with an annex, the list will be updated whenever I find something that deserves to be included here. This is why you might want to bookmark this post and to visit it occasionally, this will keep you informed.

If you are undecided, this is understandable because it is not only about the annex, it is also about the roof top tent. The concept of soft shell and hard shell type roof top tents is very different and you have to know all the details.

Note that I have a separate text about clamshell tents here in the site, and also a separate list of biggest hardtop rooftop tents that includes such clamshell tents.

So if you get familiar with this type and decide to go for such a design, then you have the iKamper tent and annex presented here in the text. This annex is completely unique and more versatile than any annex known to me that is currently on the market.

But if you go for a soft shell roof top tent, you have some of the best presented here, and their annexes are simply excellent.
