Are There Insulated Roof Top Tents?

Roof top tents usually come with some insulation on the floor, and hard shell hard-top models also have some insulation under the roof. But how about the rest?

There are a few brands of the roof top tents that offer accessory insulation cocoons that can be ordered separately, and you can install it inside of your rooftop tent. There are several benefits of this addition:

  • Such a cocoon provides great thermal insulation.
  • This also becomes a dark rest shelter.
  • Sound is damped considerably.

With such an insulated inner tent, you can use your set in all seasons, regardless of how cold it can be outside.

Examples of insulated inner liners and tents for roof top tents

Crua Outdoors insulated roof top inner tents

This brand is globally known for its insulated tents. They have them several for ground use, and now they have added a few for off-ground roof top use.

So they currently have:

  • Crua Culla Haul insulated tent.
  • Crua Culla Haul Maxx insulated tent.

These inner tents are built to fit into their Crua AER and Crua AER Maxx tents. If you are not familiar, these are soft shell roof top tents.

Note also that these insulated tents have their own air beams for support, and this is a freestanding construction. So they are much more than just an inner insulation for roof top tents. You can use them also in boats, in camper vans, RV’s, and in any other shelter and tent where they can physically fit.

The Crua Culla Haul is for up to two people, and Crua Culla Haul Maxx is for up to 3-4 people. The latter is shown in the picture below. Note that it has several vents.

Below you can see how it looks inside of the Crua AER Maxx rooftop tent:

These Crua insulated tents are available on Amazon and you can also order them directly from Crua Outdoors. Note that they have a fast worldwide delivery.

You might want to know also that the mentioned shell tent, the Crua AER, can be used on the ground as well, and this is a two-layer tent. So when you add the inner insulated tent, you have a three layer shelter for any weather.

Please see one of their AER roof top tents in this video:

Thule Tepui Insulator for rooftop tents

Here you have an inner liner designed to be used with Thule Tepui tents that are soft shell type roof top tents. They build these rooftop tents for 2, 3, and 4 people, and you have the corresponding insulator for each of them. They are available on Amazon.

This is a design where the insulator is a quilted structure with attachment elements so that you can attach it to the frame of the roof top tent. The picture below shows how it looks when attached. So the frame here is not a part of the insulator, it belongs to the rooftop tent.

Below you see the tent with the insulator inside, this all looks quite impressive.

TentBox Insulation Pod

This is something they built specifically for their TentBox Classic. So the insulating cocoon is in the same shape as its hard top shell, the picture shows how it looks:

As you see, it has zippered openings that match those on the TentBox Classic roof top tent shown below. This insulation cocoon you can order directly from the brand.

Summary

So these are currently the best examples of the insulated roof top tents and liners known to me. They add a lot to comfort of the roof top shell tents, and with such an addition you can extend your outdoor adventures through all seasons. They attach easily, and equally easy it is to remove them from a shell tent.

There are more brands that offer insulation for their roof top tents. You can see one great example also in the text about the Roam Adventure the Vagabond XL tent.

Note also that there are hard sided roof top campers that are with integrated insulation in their walls, but these are not tents and do not belong to this group.

On the other hand, some roof top tents are built from a strong cotton canvas or polycotton that naturally provides a bit of insulation which is always better from what you can get in synthetic tents.

Now imagine when you have three layers of such a polycotton fabric; you can see this in the Freespirit Recreation High Country 80″ Premium RTT. Something similar is also in the Freespirit Evolution rooftop tent with 3 layers of fabric that include an external polyester shell.
