What Is the Biggest Hardtop Rooftop Tent?

When this is about the biggest hardtop rooftop tents, only extendable clamshell type are to consider because they are the biggest of all. Here you have a few great options.

Hardtop roof top tents are generally in two groups:

1. The so-called pop-up hardtop type.
2. Clamshell hardtop type.

The first type is usually for maximum two people, so this is surely not a type to check if you want a really big roof top tent. The second group, the clamshell roof top tents include non-extendable and extendable.

The extendable clamshell roof top tents are the largest of all hardtop roof top tents, and here you have several exceptinoally large options listed.

All the tents in this group are long enough even for very tall users. With this in mind, then the width is an important parameter, so I have ordered the tents in the list below by width from less wide to more wide. But you will realize that the differences are not substantial, they are all very wide.

I shall start with the numbers here. So the dimensions of this roof top tents are (L x W) 86 x 72 inches (218 x 185 cm). As you realize, the width is such that three people should be able to sleep here side by side.

The overall area is 43.39 ft² (4.03 m²) and the peak height is 49 inches (124 cm). The weight may be an important parameter, so the structure weighs 204 pounds (92.5 kg). The weight capacity is 660 pounds (300 kg).

You have a strong and rugged aluminum hard-shell and they claim it is uniquely styled. The fabric is with what they call the One-of-Kind Light Suppression Technology (LST). The meaning is that this is a true dark rest tent without light inside when you close everything. With this you can sleep longer in the morning.

They also claim that its advanced polyurethane coating makes the tent up to 15% cooler during the day. The included mattress is 2 inches (5.1 cm) thick, it is firm and with a higher latex content. You have a breathable quilted poly topper in olive.

From the picture you realize that it has three openings with mesh and panels that create awnings, and there is also a removable rain fly. Note that you have LED included here.

What I like:

• The weight. As you see, the tent is heavy, so check in specifications of your car. it should be able to support such a weight.

2. Tuff Stuff Alpha Hardshell Roof Top Tent

This roof top tent measures (L x W) 86.5 x 73.5 inches (220 x 187 cm), and its floor area is 44 ft² (4.1 m²). The height is 53 inches (135 cm).

The design is very typical for such expandable clamshell tents, you have the door visible in the picture and it is almost completely covered by the roof and the fly. The side windows are with awnings, and you also have a skylight window.

The fly fabric is a 210D polyester Oxford with a PU coating that gives it huge 5000 mm waterproof rating. The tent fabric is a durable 280 gsm polycotton ripstop.

Regarding the shell, you have a heavy-duty aluminum honeycomb floor and an ABS lid with FRP reinforcement.

You also have a shoe bag, a storage bag, LED lights are included, and steel cable locks with 2 pairs of keys.

A few more numbers for comparison with other tents here, the weight is 176 pounds (80 kg), and the weight capacity is huge 1100 pounds (499 kg).

What I like:

3. iKamper Skycamp 3.0

Dimensions here are impressive (L x W) 83 x 77 inches (211 x 196 cm), and you have an area of 44 ft² (4.1 m²). Observe how wide this roof top tent is.

If this is not enough and you want to use this roof top tent for family camping, note that they also have a ground Annex Plus for several of their tents, including this Skycamp 3.0.

The shell material includes durable insulating honeycomb aluminum panels on the floor, and a double-layered fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) used for the lid with 1 inch (2.5 cm) air insulation.

A breathable black-out (or dark rest) thick and durable 300 gsm polycotton canvas is used for the tent’s walls, and the rainfly fabric is a polyester 75D ripstop with an eco-friendly water-repellent (DWR) coating and 3000 mm waterproof rating.

The included mattress is a 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) thick insulated polyfoam. They claim the tent is suitable for all seasons uses.

4. Overland Vehicle Systems Bushveld Hard Shell Rooftop Tent

To start with the main feature which is in the focus of this text, so the dimensions (L x W) of this tent are 85 x 78 inches (213 x 198 cm). This gives 45.2 ft² (4.2 m²) of the area.

From the picture you realize that the basic features are more or less the same as in the other tents here in the list. This means one door, side windows, and a skylight window.

But wait to see its fabric. The tent is built from an incredibly thick and double 600D ripstop polycotton. The rain fly is also a durable 420D Oxford ripstop with UV rating and with a 2500 mm waterproof rating.

The shell is made of an aluminum diamond plate used for the base, and the lid is a polymer.

Inside you have many storage pouches and also shoe bags, plus LED, an anti-condensation mat, and a memory foam mattress.

Final thoughts

So this was my selection of the biggest hardtop rooftop tents that are currently on the market. As you realize, their dimensions are truly impressive and all of them can accommodate at least three people, and some are officially even for four users.

Now how to choose?

• All of these tents are built from extremely durable fabric that make them suitable for year round use, and the manufacturers declare them as 4-season tents. But there are differences so check this carefully if you plan to use the tent in harsh conditions.

• Note that their width is in fact the length of the box when the tent is closed for transportation. This is important to bear in mind and to compare with your car dimensions.

• On the other hand, these are large but also heavy off-ground tents. There are differences in weight, so this is something to bear in mind, the weight capacity of your vehicle may play an important role.
